What Is Matrioshka Brain And How Will Humans Build One?

Matrioshka Brain

Imagine a future where humans will advance enough to build a star-sized computer system in the solar system. The idea behind Matrioshka brain was proposed by Robert J. Bradbury in 1997.

Robert described this futuristic megastructure as a class-B stellar engine that would utilize the entire energy of a star like our sun to power gigantic computer systems. But what exactly is Matrioshka brain and how can humans build one? Continue reading to find out.

What is Matrioshka Brain?

A Matrioshka brain is a powerful space-based megastructure with advanced computational capacity powered by a Dyson sphere. Its size differs from another. The creator suggests that a matrioshka brain’s size can be as small as an asteroid and as big as the entire universe.

A small-sized matrioshka brain will require only a small percent of solar power out from the Dyson sphere to operate. However, the megastructure that will be as big as the entire universe will require energies from trillions of stars, black holes, and galaxies to operate.

Whether as small as an asteroid or as gigantic as the entire universe, the primary goal of developing a matrioshka brain is to generate computation power that can operate simulations of entire virtual star systems, galactic worlds, and even the entire universe.

Matrioshka brain will operate as a Class B stellar engine which will deploy all the energy of a star to operate computer systems.

Why Would Humans Need  A Matrioshka Brain?

As humans grow technologically as a civilization, the need for advanced computing systems will surely arise. Humans living today should not expect our descendants in the next 3000 years to still use the same computing devices and hardware of the 21st century.

When humans become a type 2 civilization in the next 3200 years, they will build a gigantic Dyson Sphere around the Sun. The essence of building this powerful futuristic technology is to trap the entire solar output of the Sun.

Future humans will use this trapped energy to power spaceships and other technologies. Futuristic Robert J. Bradbury predicted in 1997 that the megastructure will surely be one of these futuristic technologies that will be powered with a Dyson sphere.

With the insane computing powers of the Matrioshka brain, humans will develop new technologies that would enable our kind to travel between stars and possibly become an interstellar species.

How Humans Will Build This Futuristic Technology?

The word Matrioshka brain came from matryoshka dolls which are Russian wooden dolls that nest inside one another. Hence, the megastructure will consist of several Dyson spheres built inside one another.

The megastructure will follow the same concept as the Matryoshka dolls, which consist of several dolls inside each other. The innermost part of this technology will extract solar energy directly from the star it encompasses.

After the extraction, it will release extremely scorching waste heat while maintaining highly efficient computing operations at the scorching temperature. The next Dyson sphere that surrounds the innermost one would absorb the waste heat and release its own waste heat to the next Dyson sphere in the Matrioshka brain.

The cycle would continue until it gets to the last Dyson sphere in the megastructure. The intensity of the released heat would continue to reduce as it migrates to the next Dyson sphere. Hence, the innermost Dyson sphere closer to the Sun would operate at the same temperature as the Sun while the outermost Dyson sphere in the Matrioshka brain would operate at nearly the same temperature as interstellar space.
