How mining the 16 Psyche asteroid, the $100,000 quadrillion space rock, could help us colonize the entire solar system
The world is approaching a future where asteroid mining will become a reality, and space agencies like NASA are working tirelessly to make this happen as soon as possible. NASA created the 16 Psyche asteroid as the most resource-rich asteroid ever discovered.
After Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis discovered the 16 Psyche asteroid on March 17, 1852, many people became interested in exploring the asteroid. For centuries, no one did anything other than to remotely observe the asteroid and learn more about its abundant, rich mineral resources.
However, on October 13, 2023, NASA launched the Psyche spacecraft aboard the SpaceX Falcon rocket to visit the asteroid. The spacecraft would arrive at the asteroid around July/August 2029 to commence its mission around the space rock.
From this mission, NASA will learn more about the asteroid and probably how to mine the resources someday in the future.
How mining the 16 Psyche asteroid, the $100,000 quadrillion space rock, could help us colonize the entire solar system
Many space agencies wanted in colonizing several space worlds within the solar system. However, attempting to accomplish this long-term goal will not come cheaply. Hence, most countries will have to allocate huge budgets in the trillions of dollars to attempt to build a fully functional habitat on the surface of any world outside Earth.
Most of these countries may turn to mining asteroids using more advanced robotic spacecraft to collect resources from these space rocks and return them to Earth safely. Since 16 Psyche is the most enriched known asteroid, many space agencies will be interested in mining this asteroid.
NASA and SpaceX might move fast to mine the asteroid. Resources gotten from this asteroid will boost the global economy, thereby enriching the agencies that successfully brought them to Earth.
Space agencies will reinvest money from the asteroid, which will significantly boost the space economy. This investment will enable these agencies to afford all the necessary equipment needed to build a city in space worlds.
When are we going to mine the 16 Psyche Asteroid?
Mining 16 Psyche will definitely not be easy. However, we are powerful enough to accomplish greater things. NASA has already launched a spacecraft to study the asteroid closely. This 16 Psyche would arrive at the asteroid in 2029 to commence its mission.
If this mission succeeds, it will become our first attempt at mining the asteroid. Space agencies will clearly understand that it will be possible to visit the space rock with today’s technology. They will slowly start planning on how to build better mining technology to commence with asteroid mining in our lifetime.
With the rate at which we are advancing, we should expect space agencies to attempt asteroid mining within the 2030s. If we did not start with mining 16 Psyche, we could mine other asteroids before mining 16 Psyche by 2050.
But one thing is certain: we must mine the most enriched asteroids someday in our lifetime. What do you think about humans mining asteroids with today’s technologies?
