How mining the 16 Psyche asteroid, the $100,000 quadrillion space rock, could help us colonize the entire solar system
The world is approaching a future where asteroid mining will become a reality, and space agencies like NASA are working tirelessly to make this happen as soon as possible. Ever since we began exploring space, the 16 Psyche asteroid has been considered the most resource-rich asteroid ever discovered. Â
After Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis discovered the 16 Psyche asteroid on March 17, 1852, many people have been interested in exploring the asteroid. For centuries, no one did anything other than to remotely observe the asteroid and learn more about its abundant, rich mineral resources.
However,  on October 13, 2023, NASA launched the Psyche spacecraft aboard the SpaceX Falcon rocket to visit the asteroid and study it closely. The spacecraft is expected to arrive at the asteroid around July/August 2029 to commence with its mission around the space rock.
From this mission, NASA will learn more about the asteroid and probably how to mine the resources someday in the future.
How mining the 16 Psyche asteroid, the $100,000 quadrillion space rock, could help us colonize the entire solar system
Many space agencies are interested in colonizing several space worlds within the solar system. However, attempting to accomplish this long-term goal will not come cheaply. Hence, most countries will have to make huge budgets running in trillions of dollars to attempt building a fully functional habitat on the surface of any world outside Earth.
Most of these countries may turn to mining asteroids using more advanced robotic spacecraft to safely collect the resource in these space rocks and safely return them to Earth. Since 16 Psyche is the most enriched asteroid known to humankind, many space agencies will be interested in mining this asteroid.
NASA and SpaceX might move fast to mine a greater percentage of the asteroid. Â Resources gotten from this asteroid will significantly boost the global economy, thereby enriching the agencies that successfully brought them to Earth.
The money gotten from the asteroid will be reinvested in the space economy to enable these agencies to afford all the necessary equipment and essentials needed to build a city on the moon, Mars, Titan, Europa, Ceres, and many others.
When are we going to mine the 16 Psyche Asteroid?
Mining 16 Psyche will definitely not be easy. However, we are known to be powerful enough to accomplish greater things. NASA has already launched a spacecraft to study the asteroid closely. This 16 Psyche is expected to arrive at the asteroid in 2029 to commence with its mission.
If this mission succeeds, it will become our first attempt at mining the asteroid. Space agencies will clearly understand that it will be possible to visit the space rock with today’s technology. Then, they will slowly start planning on how to build better mining technology to commence with asteroid mining in our lifetime.
With the rate at which we are advancing, we should expect space agencies to attempt asteroid mining within the 2030s. Even if we did not start with mining 16 Psyche, we can mine other asteroids and then proceed to mine 16 Psyche before 2050.
But one thing is certain: we must likely mine the most enriched asteroids someday in our lifetime. What do you think about humans mining asteroids with today’s technologies?
