Space agencies have been working tirelessly to detect life outside Earth for decades now. However, despite our modern technologies, we still cannot detect any alien civilization or alien microbes within the solar system or on the exoplanets we have studied so far.

On August 15, 1977, astronomers used the Ohio State University “Big Ear” radio telescope to detect an extraordinarily strong 72-second narrowband radio signal coming directly from the Sagittarius constellation.

The entire world was amazed by this discovery, and many scientists started asking questions: What could have caused this to occur? Researchers who participated in this discovery named it the Wow signal, and we still don’t know where it came from to date.

Astronomers have used modern and better technologies to search across space, hoping to spot the signal again. However, they never succeed. Now, what could have caused this wow signal to occur? Well, no one knows. But some researchers believed that it may have come from an advanced civilization that is far away.

Hence, the Wow! Signal is not counted as an actual encounter with an alien civilization. So what will actually happen the day we detect an alien civilization or alien microbes? Any day this will happen, the entire world will definitely freeze. People will now understand that we are not alone in the universe.

Everyone will come to realize that we share this universe with other civilizations out there. However, our reaction will differ in both scenarios.

So what will happen when we detect an alien civilization?

Alien civilization and Alien microbes are completely two different things. Alien microbes exist in microbial forms and may likely exist in water worlds. NASA is already making efforts to study Europa using its Europa Clipper and check for microbial lifeforms beneath those oceans.

But unlike microbial lifeforms, alien civilizations will exist as human-like civilizations with their own technologies and futuristic ambitions. If any civilization is far older than Earth, we should expect them to have more advanced technologies than us too.

However, an alien civilization may be primitive in terms of understanding technology. Hence, they may live as humans lived during the Stone Age. Since we have not detected any civilization out there, we still don’t know their capabilities when it comes to technological advancement. However, one thing is certain: an advanced alien civilization can either be hostile or friendly.

But based on some scientific studies, researchers conclude that alien civilizations have a higher chance of being hostile to strange creatures to them. So, if they ever find us, things may not go smoothly. But since every solar system in the universe is separated by many light-years, we may likely not detect any advanced alien civilization in our lifetime.

But if we mistakenly detect an alien civilization, that discovery will create huge panic across the world. Many people will definitely find the news disturbing and may start pressuring the governments to find a way to protect Earth in the case of a possible invasion.

What will happen if we detect microbial life outside Earth?

NASA’s Europa Clipper mission will arrive on Europa in 2031 to commence its operation there. If it eventually detects any form of life below the subsurface oceans of Europa, it will generally change the ideology that we are alone in the Universe.

Space agencies will become more interested in finding other lifeforms outside our planet and begin to learn how they possibly survive in such a hostile environment. New movements will be formed across the globe to find more lifeforms outside Earth.
